Lunch Buffet
1.  I Have Tasted That The Lord Is Gracious

For our devotionals I like to take a thought and then use that idea to reach out through the scriptures and see how God leads for our daily encouragement.  I was praying about a new theme and Michael called and asked if I wanted him to bring a pizza home for lunch.  I told him that if it was okay with him I would rather go out and eat pizza with him for lunch one day next week.  Then I came to my computer and pulled up my devotional program and a pizza card was on the desk that reads, "All-You-Can-Eat Lunch Buffet".  I thought of I Peter 2:2-3 "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:  If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious."  Maybe we can find some interesting things from God's Word as we begin our series titled "Lunch Buffet".  I am not sure just where we will go with this theme, but we can grow if we feed on the "sincere milk of the word" and I "have tasted that the Lord is gracious."

2.  All You Can Eat Buffet

Have you ever been to an all you can eat buffet?  I have been to a few and there are usually salad bars with fresh fruits and vegetables, and then there is the hot bar with cooked meats and vegetables.  Usually there are various types of breads and sometimes even desserts.  I don't go to these buffet places often because I try not to eat that much at one meal, and with all that food available it is hard to keep from filling my plate too full.  As I think about feasting on the Word of God, I see it as a big buffet line.  The Bible has so much to offer.  We can begin at the very beginning of creation in Genesis 1:1, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." We can read the history of God's people and learn from their stories.  The Psalms are wonderful verses of poetry praising our God while the book of Proverbs gives us instruction on daily living.  The books of prophecy have warnings to the people of the past, and include prophecies that have still not been fulfilled.  Then we come to the New Testament which begins with the birth, ministry, death, and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  The book of Acts gives us the history of the early church and we have several letters that were written to the churches.  The Bible closes with the book of Revelation which tells us what God wants us to know about the last days and our heavenly home.  Open up your Table of Contents and read it just as you would a menu and decide where you want to begin your feast.  And I don't think you can get too full from His spiritual food like you can from a buffet bar.

3.  Land Of Milk And Honey

Saturday I started looking for cucumbers and saw several that were quite big already, so I picked all that had any size and there were enough to make Michael's first batch of sweet refrigerator pickles.  (Recipe follows if you are interested in these easy to make sweet pickles.)  I was happy to see the honey bees going from blossom to blossom because I know that without them I would have no cucumbers, or much of anything, actually.  Most of the vegetables in my garden are pollinated by bees and other pollinators so I plant flowers in the garden to attract more of them.  I was happy to also see dragonflies because they eat the mosquitoes.  God has a plan and purpose for all His creation.  When I read in the Old Testament of God's promise to the Children of Israel of the Promised Land I see so much in the description of the land.  Over and over it is called the "land of milk and honey" as we see in Deuteronomy 26:9, "And he hath brought us into this place, and hath given us this land, even a land that floweth with milk and honey."  First of all, the land flows with milk.  This tells us that there were good, well-watered places for the cattle and goats to feed.  Places for the sheep to lie down in green pastures beside the still waters.  Then, we see the honey.  To describe a place flowing with honey brings pictures to my mind of apple trees in bloom and vegetable gardens with honey bees buzzing from flower to flower.  This is the perfect way to describe the bountiful land that God promised to His children.  A land flowing with milk and honey sends the message that God was providing their drink and their food and that surely He would take care of them.

Easy Refrigerator Pickles

7 cups cucumbers, sliced thin
1/2 to 1 cup chopped green pepper
1/2 to 1 cup chopped onions
1 tablespoon celery seed
1 tablespoon salt (no iodine)
2 cups sugar
1 cup vinegar

Place all ingredients in a large glass bowl and cover.  Let set at room temperature 12 hours.  Then refrigerate.

4.  God Feeds The Birds, And He Will Take Care Of His Children

I went down to check on my garden Monday and I noticed that a caterpillar had used my tomato plants for his lunch buffet.  Not only had some of the stems and leaves been eaten, but also several of the little green tomatoes were half eaten.  With the upper ninety degree days, and the dry weather, and the insects it is a struggle to not get discouraged.  But I keep doing what I can, and praying that God will bless the garden and give me enough bounty to share.  I just need to trust Him more.  Yesterday we saw that the Israelites were promised a land that flowed with milk and honey.  We can find a similar promise of God's provision in the New Testament.  Philippians 4:19 is a precious promise, "But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus."  We also see the Words of our Lord in Matthew 6:25-33.

"25  Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
26  Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
27  Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
28  And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
29  And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
30  Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
31  Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
32  (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
33  But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

5.  Bugs In The Garden

Do you ever open up your Bible and begin reading and the scriptures are just what you needed to hear?  Well, I have read the book of Joel many times and when I began this morning I thought, "This is the bug prophet."  Look how the book begins...

"1  The word of the LORD that came to Joel the son of Pethuel.
2  Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land. Hath this been in your days, or even in the days of your fathers?
3  Tell ye your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation.
4  That which the palmerworm hath left hath the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the cankerworm eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left hath the caterpiller eaten."  (Joel 1:1-4)

Yes, I have read through the little book of Joel time and time again, but never just before I walked to my garden.  The beetles are eating the beans and caterpillars are eating the tomato plants and green tomatoes.  The squash plants and cucumber vines are turning yellow and dying.  This puts the whole book of Joel into painful perspective.  My garden is a hobby and we enjoy eating the fresh vegetables but we don't go hungry if it doesn't bear.  The people of Bible days needed their gardens to survive.  They couldn't make a trip to the grocery store when the barrels were empty.  As we read God's Word it helps us to meditate on it and think about what it is saying.  To end with an encouraging thought I want to turn to another book of prophecy and close with the song of Habakkuk.

"17  Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls:
18  Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.
19  The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments."  (Habakkuk 3:17-19)

6.  Manna, Bread From Heaven

As the Children of Israel wandered in the wilderness they murmured and complained that they didn't have food to eat, so God rained down bread from heaven for them.  "And the house of Israel called the name thereof Manna: and it was like coriander seed, white; and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey."  (Exodus 16:31)  I think that when the people got up that first morning they were so excited to find food on the ground.  All they had to do was gather it before the sun got hot.  They didn't have to till the ground and plant it.  All they had to do was gather it.  And they could fix it so many ways, "And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and baked it in pans, and made cakes of it: and the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil."  (Numbers 11:8)  For a while they may have been so happy to have this manna from heaven.  But after a while they said, "We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick:  But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes."  (Numbers 11:5-6)  They ate the manna for forty years, and they murmured and complained.  How many times have we been just as ungrateful?  We may go out and buy a new pair of shoes and we wear them and we enjoy them, but after a while they start to get scuffed up and we start thinking about buying a new pair.  The Israelites wore the same shoes for forty years in the wilderness.  Sometimes we get something that we feel is really special, but then we start complaining about it and we start wanting something new or something different.  I am sorry that I complained about the bugs in my garden.  As I walk down the hill to look over the garden and pick a few squash and cucumbers the plants look pretty and green.  The flowers are blooming and the bees are buzzing about, and I really don't have any reason to complain.  God gives me such joy as I work in the garden.  I am thankful that God has helped me with my asthma enough that I can even walk to the garden.  I am thankful for the fresh vegetables that we are able to eat.  I don't want to seem ungrateful, because I really am thankful and I praise the Lord for all He has given to me!

7.  Jesus Christ, The Bread Of Life

When the Israelites ate the manna in the wilderness it only provided sustenance for their daily living.  When Jesus came to live among men he became "The Bread Of Life" that can give eternal life.

"47  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
48  I am that bread of life.
49  Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
50  This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.
51  I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world...
58  This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever."  (John 6:47-51 and 58)

Jesus said, "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled."  (Matthew 5:6)  Are you hungry for a new life?  Are you looking for satisfaction that the things of the world cannot give?  Only Jesus can satisfy your soul.  Ask Jesus to forgive you of your sin.  Believe in your heart that He is the only way to heaven and that He died and rose again to give you salvation.  He will save you and feed you with the living bread and you will have eternal life.

8.  Bible Feast

Today we open with a trivia question, but it isn't trivial because it is a Bible question.  Do you know which one of the miracles of Jesus is recorded in all four of the gospels?  I know that you could look it up quickly on the internet, but think about it a while and we may use that for our Sunday devotion.

Several years ago our youth had a summer Bible study.  We met on Sunday evenings for just a short while for eleven weeks, and covered 6 books each week.  I prepared study sheets and lessons that they could read over during the week and we went over review questions when we met together.  I learned a lot working to prepare the study guide and I hope the kids learned more about the Bible that summer.  We also had different activities for some of the weeks and one that was fun was our Bible Feast.  Each person was to find a food that is mentioned in the Bible and take it to our special meeting.  Some of the foods we had for dinner that night were very familiar, like bread, honey, apples, beans, nuts, and fish.  A couple new things that the kids tried were figs and lentils.  I am not sure that any of the kids liked those.  We drank pomegranate juice, milk, and water.  It was a fun learning experience and very tasty.  You might want to try a Bible feast for one of your activities this summer.  "And thou shalt rejoice in thy feast, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy manservant, and thy maidservant, and the Levite, the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, that are within thy gates."  (Deuteronomy 16:14)

If you would like to use our notes to study the books of the Bible this summer you can find all of them at -

9.  Feeding The Multitudes

Let's begin with our trivia question from yesterday, "Do you know which one of the miracles of Jesus is recorded in all four of the gospels?"  I was asked this question a few years ago and I did not know the answer.  Do you?  The one miracle of Jesus that is recorded in all four gospels in the feeding of the 5,000 with two fish and five loaves of bread.  Since only the men were counted in the 5,000 number, there were many, many more that were fed, as we see in Matthew 14:21.  If there was only 1 woman and 1 child for every man then there would have been 15,000, so we don't know how great a multitude it really was.

"16  But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.
17  And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.
18  He said, Bring them hither to me.
19  And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
20  And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.
21  And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children."  (Matthew 14:16-21)

You can also read about this in Mark 6:35-55. Luke 9:12-17 and John 6:5-15.  After this miracle the multitude wanted to make Jesus king.  "Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.  When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone."  (John 6:14-15)  When we continue in John 6 we see why the people wanted to follow Jesus.  "Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled."  (John 6:25)  And if we continue in the same chapter we see that many stopped following Jesus.

"66  From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
67  Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?
68  Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life."  (John 6:66-68)

Are we following Jesus because He supplies our needs and feeds us, or are we following Him because He has the Words of eternal life?

Our trivia question for tomorrow is, "Which prophet was fed by ravens when there was a famine in the land?"

Top

10.  Fed By Ravens

Do you know the answer to our trivia question, "Which prophet was fed by ravens when there was a famine in the land?"  It is an interesting story because the prophet told King Ahab that there would be no rain for three years.  During that time God fed him at the brook Cherith until it dried up.  Do you know who it was?

"1  And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.
2  And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,
3  Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.
4  And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.
5  So he went and did according unto the word of the LORD: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.
6  And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.
7  And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land."  (I Kings 17:1-7)

It was the prophet Elijah.  He was faithful to do God's will and God was faithful to provide for him.  The ravens brought him bread and meat each morning and each evening.  The Apostle Paul reminds us that God is faithful to us, too.  "God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord."  (I Corinthians 1:9)  God will provide our needs when we put our trust in Him.

For a new trivia question, "Where did the Lord send Elijah after the brook dried up?"

11.  When Your Brook Dries Up

I was still working in an office when "Finding Nemo" came out in 2003 (has it really been that long ago?) and when problems would come up at work I would walk around the office singing, "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, that's what we do, we swiiiiiiiim...."  I tried to encourage my coworkers with that silly little song, to keep on keeping on.  Then, one weekend the preacher spoke from I Kings 17:7-16, "What to do when your brook dries up?"  We can do all we can to keep on swimming to stay afloat in our troubles, but what do we do when the brook dries up?  We see the answer to our trivia question in the scriptures below.  What did Elijah do after the brook dried up?

"7  And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.
8  And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,
9  Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.
10  So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.
11  And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.
12  And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.
13  And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.
14  For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.
15  And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.
16  And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah."  (I Kings 17:7-16)

We really need rain on our little garden.  But, how would it be if it didn't rain for three years?  Elijah was fed by the ravens by the brook Cherith, but after a while the brook dried up.  In verse 8 we see that "the word of the LORD came unto him."  I think the first thing we can do when troubles come is to turn to the Word of the Lord.  God can speak to us through His Word and lead us in the right direction through the Holy Spirit.  God didn't send Elijah to a wealthy home that may have had food stored back and access to water in the dry season, but He sent him to a widow woman, who had nothing but a handful of meal and a little oil.  "So he arose and went to Zarephath."  Elijah obeyed the Word of the Lord.  He went where God sent him.  God performed a miracle to feed him, the woman, and her household and they "did eat many days."  The Bible does not say that the empty barrel and the cruse were miraculously filled, but that they were not used up.  Sometimes we look for God to answer our prayers in big ways.  We want Him to fill our baskets, and we don't notice that He is providing just as much as we need, little by little, day by day, to strengthen our faith.  (The Lord sent a great, steady rain after I wrote this devotional.)

Our trivia question for tomorrow, "Where did Jesus tell Peter to get the money to pay their taxes?"

Top

12.  Fishing By The Bank

So, where did Jesus tell Peter to get the money to pay their taxes?  At the bank by the sea.

"24  And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?
25  He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?
26  Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.
27  Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee."  (Matthew 17:24-27)

Okay, so maybe it isn't all that funny, but we need to keep our sense of humor.  Several times in the book of Psalms we read that the Lord laughs.  "He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision."  (Psalm 2:4)  Peter was a fisherman.  So the Lord could have told Peter to go fishing and sell the fish to make the money he needed.  We read several times that he fished out on the sea from his ship with nets.  But this time Peter only needed the one specific fish, that had a coin in his mouth,  and Jesus told him to cast in his hook.  Jesus could have told Judas to give Peter the coin from the money bag.  He could have just handed Peter a coin.  This story shows the faith Peter had to follow the Lord's directions.  And I am sure that it increased his faith.  I am reminded of Naaman the leper who was told to wash in the Jordan River seven times to be cured of his leprosy.  He wanted Elisha to come out and call on the Lord to cleanse him.  He went away in anger.  "And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean?"  (II Kings 5:13)  Naaman listened and dipped seven times and he was cleansed.  Like our fishing story, this required faith on Naaman's part.  When God leads us to do something, it may be that He is helping us to increase our faith.  God isn't lacking in power that He needs our help, but the more we see God using us and answering our prayers, the more faith it gives us to pray and trust Him.

Let's look at another fishing story... "Which of the apostles were fishermen?"

Top

13.  Fishers Of Men

To answer our question, "Which of the apostles were fishermen?" let's go back to the beginning of Jesus' ministry.  The first four disciples that Jesus called were fishermen.

"18  And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
19  And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
20  And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
21  And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
22  And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.
23  And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people."  (Matthew 4:18-23)

Jesus called them to follow Him and they left their nets and followed Him.  We know that Matthew was a tax collector and Simon was a Zealot.  We are not told the occupation of the other disciples, so there could have been more fishermen in their group of twelve.  After Peter denied the Lord and Jesus was crucified and rose again, Peter decided that he would go fishing.  The seven who were together at that time all went fishing.

"1  After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself.
2  There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.
3  Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.
4  But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.
5  Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.
6  And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes."  (John 21:1-6)

I think we can learn from this story that without Jesus our efforts are fruitless.  We can toil all night and catch nothing.  When we listen to the Lord and follow Him we can be fishers of men and lead others to Christ.  Join us tomorrow as we continue this story and find out, "What did Jesus eat with the disciples after He rose from the dead?"

14.  Bread And Fish On The Fire

The disciples drew the miraculous catch to the land and Jesus waited for them on the shore.  Peter, who had denied Jesus three times was given the chance to tell his Lord that he loved Him, three times.  In true fellowship, Jesus had fish and bread cooking on the coals, waiting for His friends.

"9  As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.
10  Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.
11  Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken.
12  Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.
13  Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise.
14  This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.
15  So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
16  He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
17  He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep."  (John 21:9-17)

We are not told in this scripture that Jesus ate with the disciples, but He appeared to them and ate fish and honeycomb.

"36  And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
37  But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.
38  And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
39  Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.
40  And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.
41  And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?
42  And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.
43  And he took it, and did eat before them."  (Luke 24:36-43)

Our last trivia question for these devotionals on food is, "Will we eat in heaven?"

Top

15.  Will We Eat In Heaven?

I like to cook, and I like to eat.  I especially enjoy the fresh vegetables from our garden, and bread, hot from the oven.  I remember once when we were having a big meal and our grandson Christopher, who may have been about three, came in and said, "I smell bread!"  So, we enjoy the flavor of foods, and the nice aroma of foods, and we also enjoy the fellowship we have around the table.  Since we will have glorified bodies in heaven we will not need to eat to stay alive, but I believe that the Bible shows that we will have food in heaven.  Manna, that God rained down from heaven for the Children of Israel is called "angels' food" in Psalm 78:25.  If the angels have food that they can eat, would God give us any less?  During the Last Passover that Jesus had with His twelve disciples He said, "And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;  That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel."  (Luke 22:29-30)  So we see here that not only do the angels have food, but the apostles will eat and drink at the Lord's table.  We can read more about eating in heaven in the book of Revelation.  I have been to a few weddings, but none was so great as the marriage of the Lamb will be.  What a grand wedding supper that will be!  Have you answered the call and accepted the Lord's gift of everlasting life?  Jesus will save you when you believe in your heart, and ask Him in faith to forgive you of your sin.  You don't want to miss His invitation.

"16  They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.
17  For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes."  (Revelation 7:16-17)

"5  And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great.
6  And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.
7  Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.
8  And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.
9  And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God."  (Revelation 19:5-9)

"1  And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
2  In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
3  And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
4  And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.
5  And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever."  (Revelation 22:1-5)
